A native of Ora-Igbomina, Ifedayo Local Government Area, Osun State, Yemi Farounbi was born a Libran, on 1st October, 1944 at Ijesha-Ikole in present Ekiti State. His Father, Revd. Daniel Olaoye Farounbi who translated into higher service in 1978 was clergy of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) for 41 years. His mother, Madam Dorcas Omoleye Farounbi, who in her earlier days was a teacher, seamstress and trader. Because of the itinerant nature of his father’s job, he attended four Primary Schools at Ikole Ekiti, Iporo Ekiti ending up at St. Andres School. Ushi-Ekiti in 1955.
Therefore, he proceeded to Obasola Memorial Modern Shool, Ushi Ekiti (1956-1957) before attending the prestigious Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti. (1958-1962), where he made a grade one with six distinctions in his Cambridge/WAEC School Certificate. He was for five months in Molusi College, Ijebu-Igbo to do Higher School Certificate (HSC).
In September 1964 he entered the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus to read Geology. In 1965, he was awarded a state scholarship for being one of the best ten students in the University. In the 65/66, he changed his course to Geography and moved to University of Nigeria. Nsukka Campus. Of course the civil war and political disruptions in Nigeria made him to become an Ife boy. He moved to complete his University education at University of Ife in 1986 with a Second Class Honour Upper Division. He was given a Students’ Union Certificate of Merit (1968).
He was later to do the master’s degree on Public Administration at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1974-1975 where he won the Peter Odumosu Prize for being the best Student in the final examinations in 1975/1976, he completed the course work for his Phd programme at University of Ife. He was subsequently to pass through various courses at the Polytechnic of Central London; Station University, Florida, USA; City University, London and University of Leicester, Centre for Mass Communication Research.
He had a career in teaching. In 1963, he taught at L. A. Primary School, Aramoko Ekiti, January-May, 1963 and from September – December 1963 in Doherty Memorial Grammar School, Ijero – Ekiti. He was the Senior Geography Teacher at Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure – between June 1968 and November 1969.
Between 1984 and 1990, he was a part0time lecturer in Department of Mass Communication, The Polytechnic Ibadan, teaching Advertising, Public Relation and Communication Theory. He served as External Examiner between 1983 – 1993 and External Assessor to the Senior Appointment and Promotion Committees of The Polytechnic, Ibadan From 1985 to 1990, he was also a part time Lecturer, Department of Language and Communication Arts University of Ibadan Teaching Communication Theory, History of Communication Thought Media Planning and Techniques, and Supervising a large number of postgraduate students particularly at the Masters Degree Level.
It was in the media that Yemi Farounbi made a more indelible imprint. He joined WNTV-WNBS, Ibadan in 1969 as part of the organization’s intellectualization process. He was at various times Staff Development Manager, Controller Corporate Service, Director of Administration, and ultimately General Manager NTA Ibadan at 33 in 1977. He moved to NTA Akure as General Manager in January 1981 and retired in July 1981.
He was subsequently invited to establish Television Service of Oyo State in October 1981 – 1983 as Special Assistant to the Governor of Oyo State Broadcasting. He was also Chairman Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State from January 1982 to September 1983. He was a member of the Committee on the preparation of Programming Philosophy for OGBC Abeokuta in 1976; Consultant on staffing of OGTV Abokuta 1981), Member Committee on Enquiry into the Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation (1985), Chairman, Committee on Establishment of Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, Osogbo (1992), Managing Consultant, Ondo State Radiovision Corporation Akure (1988-1989) and Chairman Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, Osogbo (200 till date) and Agbarin (1989) He was the producer of two cinema films (celluloid) Iwa (1987) and Agbarin (1989) He was producer of many television series including Arelu, Yanponyanrin 1 and 2, Igba Oro, Agbeleku Omo Inu Oku, Jomi Joke, Toluwa ni o se, Akoda Oro and Aye re.
In the print media, he has been a great columnist. He wrote Red. Bug for Peoples News (1981) These times for Owena News, and Hope (1988) Inside-out for Sunday Tribune (1992-1996), Happy Days for Ibadan Magazine (1996) and Better Days for Sunday Sketch (1999). He was Editorial Consultant, Lady Love, a Soft Sell Magazine (1987), Publisher, Broadcast International (1998-1999), Editor, Management Information Journal, (1983-1987) and Chairman, Daily times of Nigeria Plc (2000-2004).
He is Chairman, Labs Deroy Centre, Ibadan, a production Company (1981 till date), President, Deolag, Ltd, Ibadan Advertising Agency (1983-1985). Executive Chairman Delphi Communications Ltd, Lagos an ANPN Registered Advertising Agency (1985-1989). A through-bred professional Yami Farounbi is a member, International Institute of communications; Member, Overseer Press Media Association; Fellow Nigerian Union of Journalists; Trustee, Association of Nigeria Theatre Practitioners; Registered Advertising Practitioner and Fellow Society of Nigeria Broadcasters.
A numerous award winner including Osun State Merit Award (2004), Yemi Farounbi has been listed in Who is Who’s in Nigeria, Who’s is Who in Afric, Who is Who in the Common-Wealth and Who is Who in Communications in the World. He has been given many Chieftaincy titles including Otun Are Atayese of Ibadan by Late Olubadan, Oba Adeyemo, Asiwaju of Ora-Igbomina and Baaroyin of Igbominaland.
An Editor of three books, including “Television in Nigeria” “Census” and “Commercial Broadcasting in Nigeria”, Yemi Farounbi has authored the following books: “Wither Nigerian Broadcasting” (1977), “In the Defence of Nigeria Broadcasting Management”- An Analysis Principles and Practice (1978), Mass Media and the Future (1979). Television and the Society (1980). Controversy Within: The Dynamics of Office Politics (1983), and Yemi Farounbi in the media (2004). In addition, he has written over sixty-articles in renowned journals, magazines and newspapers and contributed over forty Conference or Seminar papers.
A deeply religious person, Yemi Farounbi is an Evangelist and Pastor; loves music, preaching, writing and reading. A selfless and humble person, he has a deep seated love for Nigeria and commitment to positive socio-economic growth of Nigerians. His married with beautiful children.
